Papua Region’s Copper Ore Reserve is Approximately 2.6 Million Tons

National Spatial Plans and Island Region Spatial Plans are the main references in implementing regional development throughout Indonesia.The intention is for spatial control and prevention of negative impacts on the environment due to space utilization.

In addition, regional development is also based on comparative advantage and regional competitive advantage potentials,as well as the strategic geographic position of each island.

For Papua Island, the 2015-2020 RPJM mentions the several themes for its development, which are:Acceleration in the development of value-added local commodity-based industries in the agricultural sector / sub sector, plantations, livestock and forestry; Acceleration of maritime economic development through the advancement of the fishing industry and maritime tourism; Acceleration in the development of cultural and natural tourism through the improvement of socio-cultural and biodiversity potentials;

1. Acceleration in the development of down streaming of the mining, oil, gas and copper industries;

2. Increasing he conservation area and environmental carrying capacity for low carbon development;

3. Strengthening the institutional capacity of regional governments and communities; and

4. Development of an inclusive and sustainable economic area based on indigenous villages by way of accelerating improvement in the quality of Papua’s human resources,which is independent, productive and personable.

5. The potential and superiority of Papua region as one of the largest islands in Indonesia is in the form of huge natural resource potentials in mining, oil and

6. The most dominant mining and quarrying commodities are oil, gas,gold, silver, nickel and copper. In 2013, the mining and quarrying sector contributed 33.56% to the entire region of Papua. The sector’s contribution is concentrated in Papua Province, which is one of the largest contributors to the national mining sector.

7. The concentration of Papua region’s economic growth in the mining and quarrying sector has caused fluctuations in this sector to greatly influence the overall economic growth.

Papua region has natural gas potential of 23.91 TSCF (Trillion Square Cubic Feet) or 23.45% of the national gas reserve potential. Meanwhile, oil reserves in Papua is around 66.73 MMSTB (Million Stock Tank Barrels / Oil Reserve) or 0.91%of the national oil reserve of 7,039.57 MMSTB. Natural gas reserves are located in the vicinity of Bintuni Bay, while the largest oil and gas reserve is in the vicinity of Sorong, Sarmi West Coast Block and Semai.

Gold, silver and copper are very potential mining products that have to be developed in Papua because they have more than 45% of national copper reserves, some of which are partly explored and processed in Timika (Mimika Regency). Copper ore reserve in Papua is estimated at 2.6 billion tons. Meanwhile,copper metal reserve is only about 25 million tons.

Minerals and excavations that promise other potentials are nickel ore,iron sand, and gold. Nickel ore is found in Tanah Merah area, Jayapura. Most of these resources are still indications and are still unexploited. Iron sand mining,copper ore and gold are located in the same place with the copper ore mining in Timika.
