Persipura Achievement

As quoted from https://www.bola.net/, the pride of the Papuan people has won the Indonesian League championship trophy four times, namely in the 2005, 2009, 2011 and 2013 seasons. Persipura also won runners-up in 2010, 2012 and 2014.

Persipura complemented its achievements by winning trophies at a number of prestigious tournaments in the country, including the Community Shield Indonesia 2009, Indonesia Inter Island Cup 2011 and the Torabika Soccer Championship 2016. In the international level, Persipura reached the semifinals of the 2014 AFC Cup. Persipura’s achievement is a form of people’s love for football.

Pastor Mesackh Koibur, the first General Chairperson of Persipura who is also the Secretary of the Synod of the Gospel Christian Church (GKI) in Papua, was one of the initiators of Persipura Jayapura. On the Persipura YouTube channel, Mesackh said that after May 1, 1963 to 1965, the political situation in Papua or West Irian was very tense, including Kota Baru or now Kota Jayapura.

Mesackh also contacted Barnabas Youwe, his colleague who was studying in the Netherlands. “I asked him to come home immediately and help me unite the Papuan people through football,” he said. According to Mesackh, at that time, there were junior and senior high school students that had potentials.

They also practice on a simple field with a small number of balls. Over time, the spirit of the Papuan youth has risen back. On May 25, 1965, internal clubs held a meeting at Mes GKI. “In that meeting, it was agreed to form the Soekarnopura Football Association and its surroundings or Persipura for short.

I was the General Chairperson and Barnabas Youwe the Secretary and coach.” Mesackh’s statement could be the answer to the polemic related to Persipura’s anniversary. In the Wikipedia site, the team nicknamed the Black Pearl was established on May 1, 1963 in Kota Baru.

Apart from the polemic about the year of birth, football remains the identity and unification of the Papuan people. This was confirmed by Jacksen Tiago, the coach who brought Persipura to victory in the 2009, 2011 and 2013 seasons.

“Persipura does not only rely on talent but also on togetherness and strong kinship of all elements of the team and the Papuan people,” Jacksen said. According to Jacksen, for the people of Papua, football is also entertainment and pride. “This factor made it easier for me to quickly adapt to Persipura. Moreover, our skin color, culture and vision are almost the same,” said Jacksen.

The same thing was said by Marwal Iskandar, a midfielder from South Sulawesi who brought Persipura to victory in the Indonesian League in 2005.  “I feel comfortable while playing at Persipura. Moreover, the character of Papua is no different from Makassar. The supporters also really appreciate the players of their favorite clubs,” Marwal said in one occasion.
