Papua PON, A Historical Breakthrough from the Eastern Edge of Indonesia
Throughout the history of the implementation of the National Sports Week (PON), this is the first time that a province in the eastern tip of Indonesia, Papua and west Papua, has made history as an official organizer. It is indeed an impressive breakthrough and will have a major impact and influence on many things: economic improvement of local communities, massive sport s infrastructure development. In addition, athletes and the Indonesian people can get to know their Papuan brothers more closely, face to face, offline, not online just like in the current pandemic era.
With an area of about 312,224.37 km2, Papua and west Papua is well known to the world for its natural resource potential that has economic and strategic value, and has encouraged foreign nations to compete for control of Papua. Certainly, this PON event will be a means of proving the real existence of all of Papua’s potential through the people of the archipelago itself, no longer by other nations, such as the existence of Freeport whose shares are known to be owned by the United States all along.
After 19 PON events, only at the 20th that Papua and west PapuaProvince was trusted to be the host by the majority members of the Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI) in its Annual Members Meeting(RAT), with the agenda of selecting the 20th PON host, which was held in Bandung in 2016.
Papua was selected because it garnered 66 votes, beating Bali and Aceh. After being chosen on the occasion of the KONI RAT, the Governor of Papua, Lukas Enembe, firmly stated that his province was ready to build and be a pleasant host for all PON participants.
Until September 2021, a matter of days leading up to the implementation on October 2-15, 2021, Lukas Enembe’s statement can actually be justified. According to a number of stakeholders, preparations for the 20th Papua PON at the national level will certainly run smoothly, have been carried out optimally, and at the same time be planned to take place according to the specified schedule.
RI Minister of Youth and Sports Zainudin Amali has repeatedly emphasized that the preparation for the PON and Peparnas (National Paralympics Week) for Papua are guaranteed to run smoothly as infrastructure is ready and the progress of many things related to the implementation of the PON are all going well.
The day to day chairman of PB Papua PON, Yunus Wonda, also said that three months before the event, the focus was on the delivery of goods related to PON, such as equipments and supplies for each sport. The target for the shipment of goods is planned to be completed before the opening of the PON, such as equipments for rowing, shooting, billiards, and others.
The head of the Central KONI, Marciano Norman, explained that the schedule for the arrival of the technical delegates is planned for September 15, 2021, while the athletes will start arriving in Papua four days later, on September 19, 2021 to be precise. Continuous socialization is also carried out in the hope that the resonance of the Papua PON will resound throughout the corners of the archipelago.
From the security side, the National Police Chief Gen. Pol. Listyo Sigit Prabowo and the TNI Commander Hadi Tjahjanto also ensured that conditions and situations in Papua are safe and conducive. The Head of the Operational Staff Development and Operations Bureau (Karo BinopsSops) of the National Police Brigadier General Hutajulu, as reported by www.antaranews.com (13/7/2021), stated that both the TNI and Polri will prepare security strategies that will involve other stakeholders such as the provincial government, religious, traditional and community leaders. Not only for the 20th Papua PON, the security strategy will also be applied to the 16th Papua Peparnas.
With the various preparations, plans, and security strategies that have been carried out, we all hope that the 20th Papua PON will be a turning point for the progress and revival of Papua as an integral part of the archipelago. This historical breakthrough should not be wasted without bringing significant changes to the local Papuan community. On the other hand, just like the theme song fort he current PON, we believe in Torang Bisa (People Can).
