However, not many know that Frans Kaisiepo is one of Indonesia’s national heroes who came from Papua. Based on Presidential Decree number 077/TK/1993 Frans Kaisiepo was designated as an Indonesian National Hero who came from Papua.

West Papua – Frans Kaisiepo is a young Papuan who initiates to include Papua in joining the Republic of Indonesia. The struggle was inspired by Soegoro Atmoprasodjo when he met at the Employee Course School in 1945. In fact, he was the first person to raise the red and white flag and play the anthem Indonesia Raya in Papua on August 31, 1945, when Papua was still there by the Dutch.

In fact, during his life his husband asked his son Markus Kaisiepo at that time to make a school nameplate that made Papua Bestuurschool an Irian Bestuurschool. The name Irian reflects the attitude of life and the spirit of unity, namely to reject the presence of the Dutch who are trying to recreate the post-independence Republic of Indonesia.

On 10 July 1946 Kaiseipo attended the Malino Conference as a member of the Dutch New Guinea delegation in North Sulawesi. On that occasion he proposed changing the name of Papua to Irian, as well as a firm rejection of the proposed scenario for the formation of an Eastern State. In July 1946, together with Lukas Rumkoren, Frans founded the Free Indonesia Party in Biak. Two years after the Conference, a resistance movement against the Dutch colonial government broke out in Biak. The driver of the event was Frans Kaisiepo.

West Papua In 1949, this Papuan son refused to appoint himself as the Dutch Representative for the New Guinea region at the Round Table conference in the Netherlands, Netherlands. One of the reasons for the refusal was not wanting to be dictated to by the Dutch. For this refusal, he had to be willing to serve as a political prisoner from 1954 to 1961. Furthermore, in 1971 he founded the Irian Political Party with the main goal of merging the territory of New Guinea as part of the Republic of Indonesia. The emergence of the historical event of Trikora (Three Commando History) by President Soekarno on December 19, 1961. Through the New York agreement on August 15, 1962, the Dutch forced the Dutch to hand over the political power of West Irian to Indonesia.

West Papua – Kaiseipo continues to struggle to unite Irian with Indonesia. His dream came true in 1969, Irian entered as the youngest province in Indonesia at that time. In 1972 he was trusted as a member of the MPR RI before finally serving as a Member of the Supreme Judge of the Supreme Advisory Council (1973-1979). Frans Kaisiepo died on April 10, 1979 at the age of 57 and was buried in the Cendrawasih Heroes Cemetery in the Biak City District.

For his services, the Government declared him a National Hero and awarded the Mahaputra Adipradana Star Class Two. His name was immortalized for Frans Kaisiepo International Airport. In addition, his name is also used by the Navy as the name of the pride of the Indonesian Navy, KRI Kaiseipo.

Currently, the face of Frans Kaisiepo is circulating everywhere, because his authoritative photo is plastered on the 10 thousand rupiah bill issued in 2016.
