Government Builds Baliem Dam with a Capacity of 200 Million M3

JAKARTA – The Government of Indonesia is concentrating on infrastructure development and one of them is by constructing the Baliem Dim Papua.

PUPR Minister Basuki Hadimuljono said that the Baliem Dam in Papua was designed, studied and funded in cooperation with the South Korean government.

The dam construction process is expected to be completed at a maximum of 4 years. “The government is currently rehabilitating irrigation areas, including the construction of the Baliem Dam with a capacity of 200 million m3.

The dam is potential for a 50Mega Watt (MW) power plant,” he said in Jakarta, as quoted by Sindonews.com.

According to him, the estimated construction cost of the Baliem Dam is around Rp 4.7 trillion. Another dam that is being prepared is the Digoel Dam with a capacity of 230 million m3.

He also disclosed that rehabilitation of irrigation is labor intensiv einvolving a water user farmer association (P3A). “The food,water, and energy sectors will become front liners in national development in the future, as well as vanguards for competition between countries,” he explained.

Auction Year 2018

The same thing was expressed by the Head of the Dam Center of the Directorate General for Water Resources of the PUPR Ministry, Ni Made Sumiarsih, when he revealed that the plan is to auction Baliem Dam soon in 2018 after the arrangement process of the design.

“We are still in the process of drafting the design, the auction will be done in 2018,” he said in detikFinance. Made said that the Baliem Dam is one of nine dams considered to be built this year. The Baliem Dam in Papua is the only dam which was designed and studied with Korean funding.

The dam construction process is expected to be completed at a maximum of four years. “The calculation is very rough, the budgetis approximately Rp 4.7 trillion with a capacity of 200 million m3,”he said.

Self-sufficiency in water is also one of the Government’s focuses in meeting the needs of raw water and food security in Papua. Of the 69 dams built by President Joko Widodo’s (Jokowi) government until 2019, the Baliem Dam in Papua is one of them.
