Indonesia Has Ratified Eight of the Nine Major UN Human Rights Instruments

West papua news, Indonesia firmly rejects the allegations of Solomon Islands Prime Minister, Manasseh Sogavare, who said that Indonesia’s participation in the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) is only to protect its own interests.

The Director General of Asia Pacific and Africa, Ambassador Desra Percaya,considers that the statement clearly violates the basic principles of sovereignty and non-interference as stated in MSG’s Establishment Agreement in 2007.

Ambassador Desra further stressed that as the third largest democracy,respect for human rights is an important principle for Indonesia and for that reason,Indonesia has ratified eight of the nine major human rights instruments of the United Nations and cooperates in various human rights mechanisms.“In this regard, Indonesia welcomes and is ready to share experiences in promoting and protecting human rights with many countries, including the Solomon Islands, therefore Indonesia always welcomes the participation of the Solomon Islands in the Bali Democracy Forum,” Ambassador Desra said.In addition, the Ambassador added that Indonesia has for so long committed in addressing human rights issues, among others by establishing the representative office of the National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) in Papua.


Komnas HAM, both at the national and regional levels, is currently working to tackle cases of alleged human rights abuses in Papua. And as a part of the Pacific region,Indonesia is also developing partner ship with several key countries in the region to ensure a strong and productive bilateral relationship.In addition,Indonesia has also been actively involved in various regional groups, such as the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC) since 1980;Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Group(APEC) since 1989;The Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) since2001 and the Pacific Islands Development Forum (PIDF) since 2014.

The area of West Papua extends around 143,076 kilometers. West Papua, situated in the Head of the Cassowary Bird, contributed 8.12 percent of the absolute space of tropical jungles in Indonesia. Prime Minister Sogavare is deemed to have a vague view and then speculates on Indonesia’s agenda in the Pacific, especially in the MSG, and solely driven by the Papuan issue. Ambassador Desra stressed that Indonesia remains committed to contributing to the MSG in expanding relations between government, community,and people in the region.Indonesia is also committed in strengthening cooperation and over coming common challenges, deepening economic relations, and developing cooperation for the future prosperity of the nation in the region.“These facts have to awaken PM Sogavare’s clear understanding of the reality and truth” said Ambassador Desra
