Papua’s Mountainous Land Produces Coffee with International Quality
It’s no secret that the land of Papua has abundant wealth, both in terms of crops and panorama. Wealth in the form of mining products, marine products, to plantation products has been recognized by various groups.One of the plantation products that have even effectively penetrated the international market is its coffee bean.
Supported by geographical conditions in the form of mountain ranges with fertile soil, the quality of coffee produced by Papua is unquestionable. Papua turned out to become a high quality coffee producing area.Papua contributed in making Indonesia the third largest supplier of coffee beans in the world, after Vietnam and Brazil.
As quoted from siasatpertiir.com, there are at least four typical Papuan coffees that are known to foreign countries. First is the Bintang Mountain Coffee. The source of the plant is on Mount Jayawijaya, the highest mountain in Indonesia. In the vicinity of Mount Jayawijaya, the Bintang Mountain Coffee, which has a special taste, is found. If coffee is generally grown at an altitude of 1,500 meters above sea level, the Bintang Mountain coffee is grown at an altitude of 1,800 to 2,000 meters above sea level.
The quality of the coffee produced cannot be separated from the place where it is grown. At that altitude,the air becomes very cold with temperatures reaching 1823 Celsius. With these temperatures, this coffee takes a long time to ripen. Not only is it influenced by the temperature, but the lack of light intensity due to frequent fog makes the ripening process verys low. However, this is what makes the Bintang Mountain coffee very special.This process causes the coffee’s nutrients to accumulate and the coffee’s taste tends to become more acidic. The Bintang Mountain coffee has a distinctive taste which is berry, citrus,fruity orange, sweet chocolate, sugarcane, and peach. So it’s not strange ifit is then demanded by many foreign consumers.
Second is the Amungme Coffee. This type of coffee is cultivated directly by the Amungme tribe in Papua.Initially, this coffee came from Dogiyai but later cultivated by the farmers there. Similar to the Bintang Mountain coffee, this coffee grows in the highlands. Amungme coffee is produced in Timika Regency. This coffee is grown in a number of places with an altitude of about 2,500 meters above sea level, namely in the villages of Oroanop, Tsinga, Hoya, and Banti.
What makes the Amungme coffee special is the process in which it is grown. It is naturally fertilized with nitrogen plants and forest compost and mulch materials. This type of Arabica coffee was developed by PT Freeport Indonesia and cultivated by the Amungne tribe near the Tembagapura mine. In a month,farmers can produce about one ton of coffee beans. It has not only become a local commodity but its strong aroma has also attracted the interests of various countries outside Indonesia, such as Europe, Australia,New Zealand, and the United States.
Third is the Moanemani Coffee. This is one of the superior coffee varieties from Papua. This coffee comes from the Dogiyai district. In terms of marketing, Dogiyai Regency is a strategic area because it is a transit area for several areas in Central Papua. The planting process is the similar to the two coffees previously mentioned, which is the traditional
method of planting and using organic fertilizers that are available around the plantation.
Initially, this coffee was brought by a Dutch missionary priest named Henk Smith in the 1960s. The Moanemani coffee is a type of Arabica coffee grown organically by traditional farmers of the Mee tribe, in Mapia District, Papua. At first, the coffee seeds were imported from their neighbor, Papua New Guinea. Meanwhile, Papua New Guinea gets these coffee seeds directly from Kingston, Jamaica where the taste almost resembles the Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee, the best type of coffee in the world.
Fourth is the Baliem Coffee. Again, it is the elevation of the ground that makes this coffee from Wamena very
special. Planted at an altitude of more than 1,500 meters above sea level with stable temperatures, the acid con- tent is low so that there is a balance between sour and bitter tastes. This coffee grows in the Baliem Valley of the Jayawijaya Mountains, Wamena.
The Baliem coffee is famous for its distinctive taste. The aroma produced by this coffee is brown and floral which is quite fragrant with a medium body, moderate sweetness, and low acidity so that the resulting taste feels so balanced and smooth. In addition, this coffee is considered a unique type of coffee, because even in Indonesia, it is still currently rare for coffee to have a floral sensation.
